There are four classes astronauts can choose from at the start of character creation. Each class comes with two class-specific items in addition to the four standard starting items and a class-specific amount of skill points per proficiency.
Selecting a certain class can affect gameplay in different ways. The variation in starting items for one can make a difference in combat, while additional tools may help with crafting or constructing certain items, structures or utilities earlier because resources are not used to craft new tools. Most importantly, the amount of stat points per proficiency allows players to progress faster within certain branches of the skill tree, unlocking essential gear or structures that can further accelerate progression.
